Darrel and the Stait Park Renovation

10/2/2012

I am pleased and excited to announce that Darrel's Playground will be a part of the Stait Park {on Garafraxa St. and Provost Lane} renovation and transformation into the first fully accessible playground built in Fergus and Centre Wellington!!  "Power of Play", a local group organized by Andy Speers (whose son Asher was born with Down Syndrome), hopes to raise the needed $150,000 - $175,000 to make this massive undertaking a reality.  With your support, "In Memory of Darrel Robb" will be included with other sponsors on the park's dedication sign.

Ever since I begun Darrel's Playground, I have wanted it to exist not only in cyberspace, but somewhere in the physical world as well.  Originally I had plans to do something at St. Joseph's Catholic School, where Darrel had attended Junior Kindergarten, but there have been several setbacks along the way, which  along with the passage of time, has made that option no longer
viable.  This project at Stait Park provides an excellent way to allow me to achieve some part of this dream, while helping the present and future children of my community a safe and  all inclusive, barrier-free area to enjoy the outdoors.

While there will be many fundraisers for the park in the future, I would greatly appreciate you donating through me directly to the Playground's account,  so that the funds will go towards getting Darrel's name on the sign.

To become a "Bronze Sponsor", we need to raise at least $3000 over the next 18 months.   Every 2 months, I will transfer the money to Mr. Speers, who will then have the Township of Centre Wellington issue a Tax Receipt for all donations over $25.00, which I'll mail out to you once I receive them.

If you have any questions and/or interested in making a Donation and a Difference, please contact me:

1. Through Facebook (if currently connected to me on that site)
2. Email: darrelsplayground@yahoo.ca
3. In Person (if in the Centre Wellington area)
4. PayPal available from "About Us/Fundraising" Page

From Power of Play:

Wow! Most votes ever yesterday!! That is amazing!!

You will notice that our rank is 16/98 - isn't that incredible!!

But the real number that we need to be concerned with is where we stand in the large category. We need to be in the top 10, and currently we are 13th....377 votes behind 10th place.

So if everyone of our facebook supporters (385 of you wonderful people) registered one more person - your mom, your daughter, your son, your uncle - we could win this thing!

Only 5 more days to make this happen!!

Thank you so much for your support - you guys ROCK!

On November 20, 2012, Dixon's Home Hardware Building Centre held a Ladies Night Silent Auction in support of Power of Play's planned renovation of Stait Park in Fergus. I am pleased to announce that $942 was raised that evening, and that this money has been donated as part of Darrel's Playground's contribution to the project!

A HUGE Thank You goes out to Matt Johnston, Dixon's Floor Manger, and all who were involved in selecting our cause to support, and for making the Auction the success it was.

Please continue to Vote daily for Power of Play in the Semi Finals of the Aviva Community Fund Competiton (Dec 3-12).

Thank You

Although Power of Play didn't make it into the Finals this year, I would like to say Thank You once again to everyone who voted for the project in the Aviva competition.

Darrel's Playground looks forward to its continued involvement with Power of Play in the new year. Stay Tuned for more fundraising promotions.

From Power of Play:

It's official, we didn't make it into the finals of the Aviva Community Fund. Thanks to everyone who voted, shared, and cheered us on! We are very appreciative of the support, and know that even though we didn't win the fund, only good things will come of the exposure. Happy Holidays to everyone, hopefully 2013 will bring a new playground for the children of Centre Wellington!!!

Last month, Power of Play and the Stait Park renovation project received a $80,000 Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation!!! With this much needed funding, the Park's timetable has been moved forward by almost a year, with construction starting this May (2013), and completion scheduled before school gets out for the summer in late June.

Donations for Darrel's inclusion in the Park has almost reached our $3,000 goal, but anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

The majority of all these entries were written by Darrel's father, Stephen.  For those that are not, efforts have been made to give proper credit where it is due.

The bulk of the posts are in the June 2011 Archives Section, as that is when I transferred them over to this site.  Category Tags should allow you to find entries easier.

I've tried to correct spacing issues on many of the entries, as most of the older ones have been copied from different sites I've used in the past. I apologize if some have been overlooked.
